Have you ever missed an opportunity or you messed up a project and you keep thinking about it, thinking about what you should have done and not done and you can't just get it out of your mind. It could have even affected you for a few days, maybe you were not able to eat well or you could not even concentrate at work??? This is a good example of overthinking and what it can do to someone.
Overthinking is to think about something over and over again over a period of time. It can be thoughts about the past or thoughts about the future. It should be noted that overthinking is not the same as problem solving and does not yield any positive result, instead it can lead to further worries and may delay one from making decisions or taking the right actions.
Overthinking can also lead to depression and anxiety and can cause serious health issues if not properly taken care of early. People normally overthink when they are faced with a major decision like buying a car, getting married, choosing a university, renting a new apartment and so on.
How To Stop Overthinking
1. Let go of the past
You have to realise that you can't change the past and you have to move on disregarding whatever has happened or whatever you have done wrong. So you need to stop thinking about "what ifs" and "should haves", clear your mind and forge ahead.
2. Focus on the moment
You need to focus on what is happening around you at the time, this means you forgetting the past and getting acquitted with the current situation of things. This can also mean facing reality about a situation and stop thinking of what it could have been.
3. Focus on the solution
As much as you might want to play the guilt or blame card, you have to avoid this and focus instead on the solution. Write down the issue you are thinking of and write down possible solution to the problem and start implementing them immediately.
4. Find a distraction
Sometimes no matter how much we try, we just can't get an issue out of our thoughts, the right thing to do is to find a distraction. We can do this by learning a new skills, finding a new hobby or finding something that we can do to task our brain.
5. Get help.
You have to admit that you have a problem and you need help. You can talk to a therapist, your partner, family and friends so they can help you to stop overthinking and start acting.
Final Thoughts
Overthinking in itself is not bad if done once in a while but it becomes a very big problem if it keeps occuring, so let go of that issue, find a solution and move on. What other things do you do to stop overthinking? You can reply by leaving a comment below, thanks for reading.
